DESCRIPTION:With sadness\, we want to let you know that Open House will be closed the week beginning March 16. We will be closed for the entire week. \n\n\n\nWe do not have a known case of COVID-19 in our community\, but there is a palpable sense of increased anxiety in the air following the WHO’s official declaration of a COVID-19 pandemic and a steady drumbeat of news about cancellations and closings in Brooklyn\, in New York City\, and across the country. We made the decision in accordance with the CDC’s current framework for implementing strategies to prepare for and mitigate transmission of COVID-19. \n\n\n\nUnfortunately\, many of our staff must take mass transit to do their work at Open House. The nature of a preschool does not allow working from home as an option. In addition\, our school is a gathering place for hundreds of people a day\, including staff\, children\, and their families and caregivers. To facilitate social distancing\, our only option is to close. \n\n\n\nWe recognize the difficulties that our closing places on many families and the sadness your children may feel when they realize they cannot come to school to see their friends. Here is an article that might help you talk with your child. Here’s an article with suggestions on how to structure your child’s day. The NYC Department of Health maintains a website with the latest information on the novel coronavirus. \n\n\n\nDuring this time\, we will also continue to rely upon communications from within our community. We ask that all community members share their exposure/infection status with us\, as well as letting us know if you are self-quarantining for any reason. \n\n\n\nWe want to emphasize that there are still no known cases of COVID-19 in the Open House community. We made the decision to close school in the best interest of our community and in response to new developments and changing guidelines from public health authorities. We knew that the situation could change rapidly\, and it did. All of us at Open House–the school leadership\, the faculty and staff\, and the Board of Directors–are committed to doing what is best for our students\, their families\, and the larger community. \n\n\n\nThe wellbeing of our school community remains our highest priority. We look forward to reopening soon and will reevaluate the situation next week. DESCRIPTION:  \nOpen House School Community\, \nWe are all now entering uncharted waters. As times get harder we need to remember we are stronger than we may initially think. We each have individual strengths and resources that can help ourselves and others. Please remember that we as a school community still have so much to be thankful for. \nAs we trust you already know\, all New York City public schools will be closed until at least April 20th. As such\, we think that Open House will be closed for at least that long as well. While this is only one element of what we as individuals\, a school community\, and a city will have to figure out\, for now at least we have a date to work with in terms of the school being closed. \nAlthough the situation remains fluid\, one of our thoughts is to extend the academic 2019-20 school year beyond June 5th. We know that this is not a perfect solution — in fact there is not a perfect solution — but it is on our list as an option. \nWe also have some ideas about how we can keep our Open House community together during the time we are physically closed. We will launch shared photo and video album streams for each classroom. The teaching staff will post short video clips and some photos through out the week. Families can also add photos\, videos and comments to the album as well. We are working this out now and hope to have a version of it up and running this week. \nAs well\, remember to keep us informed of any confirmed cases of\, or medically ordered quarantines for\, Covid-19 that may happening in your family. \nPlease reach out to us with your concerns or thoughts. We ask that you copy Eileen\, Tom and Carey with your emails so the administrative team can understand what families are thinking. We may not be able to act on each individual concern\, but we will do our very best to take everyone’s needs into account. \nTimes ahead will be harder than before\, but as Eileen likes to say\, “we can do hard things.” We must all remember to be even more generous\, thoughtful and kind to ourselves and each other in the time ahead. \n– Eileen\, Tom\, Carey and the Open House Team
